Bill O’Brien obtained in some punting practice at the podium Tuesday afternoon.
The Houston Texans coach repeatedly declined to comment on the firing of general manager Brian Gaine over the weekend after only 17 months on the job. Despite several overtures, O’Brien deferred to the statement chairman Cal McNair released Friday.
“Again I will go back to the announcement that Cal (McNair) made,” O’Brien said. “I’ll state it again. He did a thorough test of what goes on in this building on a day-to-day basis relative to the procedures that are in place in many different areas. Not just coaching, scouting. Every area. Training room, gear, nutrition, company side. Everything. That’s what I will tell you .”
Asked whether he believed Gaine had to be fired to move the organization ahead, O’Brien declined to inform inquiring thoughts.
“I will go with the statement again,” he said. “I stand by the statement (Cal McNair) made. An announcement was made by cal. He had to make a choice. He assessed everything and he told me what he wanted me to do to enhance and help with his vision of where he sees that business going or where it needs to enter his view.”
Pressed further about if his relationship with Gaine changed since the former GM has been hired in Jan. 2018, O’Brien again passed.
“Again, I will say like I mentioned before is that before, at the announcement that Cal made, Cal created an appraisal, a comprehensive evaluation and this is the conclusion that has been made and that is what I will say about that,” he explained.
While O’Brien declined to supply any background on his relationship with the former GM and also his role in the hiring of the next GM or offer anything of interest or substance, he wanted it understood it was McNair’s conclusion and that his job was also a portion of this evaluation process.
“I think anytime you get information like that, immediately, it’s a tough choice for Cal to create,” O’Brien said of the shooting. “But again he had been very clear with me personally with what he desired me to do to improve and his vision for the football team and his vision to the organization and that is what we’re doing now. We’re moving ahead. We are excited about the future”
That future will comprise O’Brien along with a new GM.
