After years of speculation and preparation, the Phillies have landed their celebrity.
It took until the final day of February, but the Phils have agreed to a deal worth $330 million with Bryce Harper, a source tells NBC Sports Philadelphia Phillies insider Jim Salisbury.
Manny Machado functioned as the pace car, agreeing on Feb. 19 to some 10-year, $300 million deal with the Padres. At one stage in the offseason, it appeared that valuation was too high, although that the Phils were prioritizing Machado. Harper will probably be better for business, which factored into the purchase price and attracts more of an amusement variable. In certain ways, Harper can also be a match since he adds power that is left-handed.
In the days leading up with Harper to the Phillies’ arrangement, he was attached to the Dodgers, a scary suitor due to their deep pockets, closeness to Harper’s Las Vegas home and their ability to compete immediately. But money talks and the Phillies’ offer was the richest.
